The Meaning of the Word Life in the Declaration of Independence

by John Ballas

The three inalienable rights that Jefferson included in the Declaration of Independence are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. These are natural laws that Jefferson and the supporters of his document believed were given to us by our Creator and that no authority has the right to take away. The three rights are actually one; liberty defines life, while the pursuit of happiness defines liberty. Life is intolerable under a tyranny that denies our freedom to pursue a correct interpretation of the pursuit of happiness and it is the commission of every Christian born in this country to declare the true definition of the word LIFE.

We can infer from Patrick Henry's famous statement that since death is preferable to tyranny that the concept of liberty is synonymous with life itself. Similarly, we can infer from Christ's statement in John eight that if the Son will make you free you will be free indeed, which implies that true life is liberty from the tyranny of sin.

Life is the liberty to have fellowship and purpose. True fellowship with our Creator is only possible in the liberty Christ gives us, having freed us from the curse of sin by becoming our curse; thereby restoring the lost fellowship, communion and knowledge of the eternal Almighty. Once freed, our purpose it to serve Him and our neighbor in love. This is the correct interpretation of the pursuit of happiness, our highest calling and an end in itself; hence, life has meaning only when we know Him, and fulfill His purpose, reflecting His love and attributes to all.

As an American, we have a special obligation under a constitution founded on the inalienable right of LIFE to properly discern the depth and scope of this word (even if Jefferson was a deist). Life is more than just the act of awareness and response to stimuli; it is not the freedom to pursue our selfish ambitions and lusts. If life is liberty with godly purpose then it is imperative that Americans guard against the systematic dumbing-down of our citizens, young and old, who are encouraged to neglect the great founding documents of our country and the protection of individual liberty upon which they are based. Our individual rights are daily eroding by those in positions of power intent to remove them. Their methods are effective when they have us believe that the greatest danger is to our physical health, rather than to our liberty which is in fact, the true meaning of life. This attack comes by those committed to resetting and restructuring society through collectivist propaganda designed to have us trade our national birth right for a medical technocracy; whereby we subject ourselves to a global tyranny. Our nation will continue marching in this direction unless there is a Divine outpouring of the Spirit in our hearts, giving us wisdom to know what LIFE is; without it, very soon our nation will cease to exist.
